Portugal Elopement Photographer & Planner

Wild Atlantic cliffs, slow mornings, beautiful food and a wedding day that actually feels like yours.

Portugal gives you old cities, quiet beaches, a wonderfully wild coastline and plenty of space to make a wedding day your own.

As your Portugal elopement photographer and planner, I help you find the right places, work out what activities really feel like you and help you bring everything together. Then document  the day as it happens.

No standard itinerary. No spending eight hours simply moving from one photo spot to the next.

Just a day (or a couple of days if you prefer) made around the two of you, in a part of Portugal that feels exactly right.

Plan Your Portugal Elopement

Portugal elopement photography + personalised planning, anywhere in the country.

Hey, I’m Thijsiena

I kept coming back to Portugal long before I started photographing weddings here. I drove down from Germany again and again, travelled through the country by van, followed the coast, surfed, explored and eventually lived in Aljezur for a while.

At some point, Portugal stopped feeling like somewhere I was simply visiting. I got to know the west coast beyond the places that tend to appear on every travel list. The small roads that take much longer than Google Maps would have you believe. Beaches that look completely different depending on the tide. Afternoons when the wind picks up out of nowhere. Evenings when suddenly everything goes quiet.

And, importantly for elopements, I learned that somewhere looking beautiful in a photograph doesn't automatically mean it's a good place to spend your wedding day. Over time, I started working here as a Portugal elopement photographer too.

The time I've spent here now feeds naturally into the planning. I know when a drive is likely to take longer than expected, which parts of the coast feel different depending on the season, and when it's worth looking a little further instead of choosing the obvious location.

Sometimes the day starts with coffee in Lisbon and ends beside the Atlantic.

Sometimes the Algarve is exactly right, but the best part is further west than you originally imagined.

Sometimes it's Porto, a long lunch and absolutely no reason to leave the city.

Portugal gives you very different ways to do this.

We'll find the one that suits you.

Portugal isn't just somewhere I travel for work

Which Portugal feels like you?

The best place to elope in Portugal isn't necessarily the place you've seen most often online.

It helps to start with what you want the day to feel like instead.

Lisbon, Sintra & Ericeira

City in the morning. Atlantic in the evening.

This is one of my favourite combinations for couples who don't want to choose between a city elopement and a day outdoors.

You could start among Lisbon's tiled buildings and little cafés, move into the forests and palaces around Sintra, then finish somewhere on the Atlantic coast near Ericeira.

There is room for good food, wandering, architecture, ocean and a little bit of everything in between.

Read the Lisbon Elopement Guide

Algarve & Sagres

Golden cliffs and the wild edge of Europe.

The Algarve is famous for good reason. But you don't need to spend your wedding day on the same beach everyone else has saved on Pinterest.

Further west, around Sagres and the surrounding coast, things become rougher and quieter. This is the location of one of my favourite beaches of all times. The beaches here are long and whimsical.

Big cliffs. Small coves. Windy headlands. Long stretches of Atlantic coastline full of beautiful little towns like Aljezur, Salema, and Sagres to just name a few.

If you'd like to spend most of the day outside and you're drawn to warm colours, ocean and slightly wilder landscapes, southern Portugal is a very good place to start.

Porto & Northern Portugal

Cobblestones, wine and a little less polish.

Porto has a completely different energy.

It's colourful, steep and slightly chaotic. There are old buildings, little restaurants, the Douro cutting through the city and vineyards not far away.

You don't need a mountain hike for your wedding day to feel like an adventure.

Getting lost in a city you love works too.

Madeira

Mountains meet the Atlantic.

Madeira is hard to beat if you want dramatic landscapes and a good surf.

Mountain ridges, old forests, waterfalls and volcanic coastline are all surprisingly close together.

It works especially well if hiking and being outside are a big part of the reason you've chosen to elope.

The Azores

Green, volcanic and wonderfully far away.

The Azores feel much more remote.

Think crater lakes, hydrangeas, black volcanic rock, hot springs and a lot of green.

If you'd happily trade predictable weather for somewhere that feels a little more wild, they are worth looking at.

Why Portugal is such a good place to elope

If you're planning to elope in Portugal, one of the best things about it is how much variety you can fit into a trip without spending your whole wedding day travelling.

You can have city and coast

In and around Lisbon or Porto, food, architecture and city life can easily be part of the same trip as beaches, cliffs and the Atlantic.

You don't have to pick one version of Portugal.

The outdoor season is long

Portugal gives you plenty of options outside the traditional summer wedding season.

The exact conditions vary a lot between the north, south, mainland and islands, so choosing the right region is just as important as choosing the right month.

The landscapes aren't all the same

The golden Algarve looks nothing like northern Portugal.

Madeira is different again.

And the Azores have their own volcanic, very green character.

Eating well is easy to build into the day

This matters more than it might sound.

A long lunch, wine tasting, fresh seafood or dinner somewhere tiny and local can be part of the wedding rather than something squeezed in after the photos are finished.

There are plenty of places beyond the famous ones

You don't need the most recognisable cliff in Portugal for your elopement to be beautiful.

Often, somewhere quieter gives you much more space to actually enjoy being there.

You don't need a photographer who simply turns up in Portugal

Photography is obviously a big part of what I do. But I also want the day itself to work. As your Portugal elopement photographer and planner, I'm thinking about things that won't necessarily show up in the final gallery.

What will the beach be like at that tide?

Is sunset actually the quietest time to go there?

How windy is that stretch of coast likely to be?

Will the drive that looks short on a map take us down twenty minutes of tiny roads?

Does combining Lisbon and the coast sound exciting, or are we accidentally planning a day mostly spent in the car?

Where should you stay so the morning begins slowly rather than with a long journey?

And if the Atlantic weather has other ideas, where do we go instead?

Those details are especially important for a Portugal adventure elopement, where the landscape and what you want to do in it shape the whole day.

You won't get a generic list of ten locations and be asked to choose one.

We'll start with you and build from there.

What's included in your Portugal elopement planning

My Portugal elopement planning is included alongside the photography.

Some couples arrive with a very clear idea. Others know little more than “Portugal, somewhere near the ocean.”

Both are completely fine.

Personal location research

I don't send every couple the same list of Portugal elopement locations.

I'll look for places based on what you actually want: the kind of landscape, how private you'd like it to feel, how much walking you're happy to do, accessibility, the season and where it makes sense to stay.

A timeline that doesn't feel like a timetable

We need a plan.

We don't need every ten minutes of your wedding day accounted for.
I'll build the timeline around light, travel, temperature, tides where they matter, meals, activities and enough space for things to take a little longer than expected.

Accommodation suggestions

Staying close to where the day is happening can make a huge difference.
I'll help you look at options that work with the rest of the plan, particularly for more rural or coastal locations.

Local vendors

Flowers, hair and makeup, a celebrant or something else?
I'll help you find people whose work fits what we're creating.

Permits and access

If a location needs a permit or comes with specific access considerations, I'll help you work through that too.

Things you actually want to do

You don't have to exchange vows and then spend the rest of the day having your photograph taken.

Go surfing.

Take a boat out.

Walk along the coast.

Taste wine.

Swim.

Have a picnic.

Spend three hours over lunch.

Wander around Lisbon without being particularly sure where you're going.

If it sounds like a good day to you, it can probably belong in your wedding.

A Plan B

Atlantic weather can be unpredictable.

We'll know what the alternatives are before we need them.

Portugal through real elopements I've photographed

I've already had the chance to photograph couples in very different parts of Portugal.

Those real days are a much better introduction to what an elopement here can look like than any list of locations.

Rachel & Alex — Porto

Rachel and Alex built their day around Porto itself.

The city wasn't somewhere we passed through on the way to a more dramatic backdrop. It was the experience.

We wandered, explored and left enough room for things to happen without turning the day into a sequence of photography locations.

See Rachel & Alex's Porto Elopement

Ashley & Craig — Sintra & Ericeira

Ashley and Craig combined two sides of this part of Portugal and brought their whole family.

Sintra brought forests, old architecture and a slightly dreamlike atmosphere. Ericeira brought us back to the Atlantic.

Two very different landscapes without trying to cram an entire country into one day. Many couples feel drawn to the whimsical atmosphere in Sintra but there are so many more beautiful places in Portugal that are less touristy.

Algarve Elopement

The Algarve has a way of making you slow down and take it all in. From the rugged cliffs of Sagres to the quiet beaches and endless ocean views, it’s a place where your elopement can unfold naturally, without feeling like a day built around a checklist. It’s about finding your own little corner of this beautiful coastline and letting the day become something that feels entirely yours.

Michelle & Carley- A Sintra elopement

Michelle and Carley came to Portugal for a day that felt entirely their own, with their family joining them for meaningful moments in both the morning and the evening. Their Sintra elopement unfolded between whimsical forests, hidden corners, winding roads and the wild Atlantic coastline. We explored the town, escaped the crowds, shared a seafood lunch by the ocean and eventually found our way to the cliffs to exchange their vows. It was a day shaped by family, spontaneity and the kind of adventure that makes eloping in Portugal feel so special.

What does a Portugal elopement actually look like?

It can look however you want it to.

But if “we're going to elope in Portugal” is still a slightly abstract idea, here's one way it could come together.

A two-day Lisbon + Atlantic Coast elopement

Day one

Wake up in Lisbon without setting an alarm for 5am.

Go for coffee. Find a pastel de nata.

Get ready slowly.

Spend the afternoon walking through the city, stopping when you feel like it.

Have a drink somewhere.

Take some photographs along the way.

Go for a very good dinner.

Day two

Sleep in.

Leave Lisbon and head towards Sintra or the Atlantic.

Walk for a while.

Find somewhere quiet.

Say your vows.

Open a bottle of something afterwards.

Stay for sunset if the weather is good.

Finish with a picnic, a little restaurant or dinner back at your accommodation.

There is a plan behind all of this.

It just doesn't have to feel like you're following one.

Want to explore this idea further? Read the Lisbon Elopement Guide.

Portugal is the backdrop. You are still the story.

It would be very easy to make destination elopement photography all about the scenery.

The huge cliff.

The perfect sunset.

The photograph where you're two tiny people in the middle of an enormous landscape.

I love those photographs.

I just don't want them to become the point of the day.

My approach to Portugal elopement photography is mostly documentary.

I'll give you direction when it's useful. I'll help if suddenly having a camera around feels strange. But I don't want to choreograph every interaction between you.

I'd rather photograph what actually happens.

Walking somewhere together.

Talking.

Eating.

Laughing.

Hair going everywhere because we chose an Atlantic cliff and, unsurprisingly, it's windy.

Missing a turn.

Stopping because the light suddenly looks incredible.

The landscape matters.

You matter more.

We'll probably be a good fit if…

  • You care more about how the day feels than following wedding traditions.

  • You want beautiful photographs without spending hours posing for them.

  • You'd rather find somewhere that suits you than somewhere famous.

  • Food, travel and exploring are part of why you're choosing Portugal.

  • You want help planning, but don't want the day to feel over-planned.

  • A little wind doesn't bother you.

  • You'd like to recognise yourselves in your wedding day.

How Portugal elopement planning works

1. Tell me what you've got so far

You don't need to arrive with a finished plan.

You don't even need a location.

“Portugal + ocean” is enough.

2. We find your part of Portugal

Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve, Madeira and the Azores all offer something very different.

We'll work out which one makes sense for you.

3. We put the day together

Locations, activities, accommodation, vendors, timing and the practical details.

Enough planning that you can relax once you're here.

4. Come to Portugal

At that point, most of the decisions have already been made.

You can get on with enjoying it.

Portugal Elopement FAQ

Come and see the Portugal I fell in love with.

Maybe you already know exactly where you want to go.

Maybe you've been before and can't imagine getting married anywhere else.

Or maybe you've just saved a photograph of a wild Atlantic cliff and thought, somewhere like this.

That's enough to start.

Tell me what you're drawn to, what you enjoy doing together and what you want this whole thing to feel like.

We'll take it from there.
