In the summer months, temperatures can reach up to 35 degrees Celsius (95F), while in the winter months, they can dip as low as 10 degrees Celsius (50F).

  • May–June: Spring blooms, fresh green landscapes, perfect temperatures (~22–26°C), and quieter towns before the summer rush. A sweet spot for couples who want both lush nature and comfort. Portugal feels so vibrant and fresh.

  • September: One of our top recommendations — the ocean is still warm from summer, the sunsets are long and golden, and most tourists have gone home. Ideal for beach or clifftop elopements. Also, the wind settles in September. For all who have been to Portugal, know that it can be quite windy along the cost

  • October: More dramatic skies, fewer people, and rich, moody tones in the landscapes. Great for storytelling photography and cozy dinner setups.

  • Winter months (Nov–Feb): Ideal for forest elopements or cozy inland venues — think misty castles and roaring fireplaces. Mild weather, but some rain possible. The chances of rain are higher, but especially down south at the Algarve it’s still mild and beautiful.

I usually advise avoiding July and August if you want privacy — these are peak holiday months with higher heat and more beach crowds, especially along the Algarve.

How to get legally married in Portugal as a foreigner

To get married in Portugal as a foreign citizen, you must meet certain legal criteria. However, you don’t need to be a resident of the country or reside in the country for a certain amount of time.

  • The minimum age requirement is 18 years old (16 with parental approval), and you need to provide proof of residence, such as your passport.

  • Additionally, you will need a certified copy of your birth certificate issued within the last six months.

  • For those who are not British citizens, you must also present a certificate of no impediment, which must be officially translated into Portuguese if it was issued outside of Portugal.

When planning to wed in Portugal, it's essential to do your research. Regulations are subject to change and should be verified by contacting the consulate in the country for up-to-date information on any additional requirements that may apply. For example, depending on where you are from and the type of marriage license you choose, additional documents may be requested for presentation at city hall or other local government offices.

In addition to these general requirements for marriage in Portugal as a foreigner, there are specific procedures that must be followed based on your nationality and relationship status prior to the wedding day. Certain documents have different expiration dates depending on where it was issued and whether or not it needs to be translated into Portuguese. Furthermore, some municipalities require applicants to appear in person while others accept applications via mail or email. Ultimately, careful preparation is necessary when considering getting married in Portugal as a foreigner in order to ensure that all the paperwork is complete and all regulations have been followed properly so that your special day can go off without a hitch!

Can you get legally married as a Queer couple in Portugal?

Portugal is a country we can highly recommend for LGBTQI+ couples! Same-sex marriage has been legally accepted in Portugal since 2010 and is now firmly established within the country. Couples of all genders are treated equally, with the same requirements to get married as heterosexual couples. This means that LGBTQI+ couples can enter into a marriage contract in Portugal as well.

The Portuguese government has taken many steps over the years to ensure that members of the LGBTQI+ community have access to their basic rights and freedoms, including their right to marry who they choose. In addition, there have been various campaigns developed to create greater visibility and recognition of the LGBTQI+ community in Portugal.
