Where to elope in Switzerland?

Switzerland has some of the best views on the planet: Beautiful turquoise lakes glittering in the sun, lush green meadows full of peaceful cows with their large bells, cutesy cafes in small Swiss towns invite for a rest, and all this surrounded by an absolutely stunning mountain panorama! Naturally, we think Switzerland is one of the most amazing places to elope. But where to get started when planning your Switzerland elopement?

We did a little location scouting, so you won’t have to do it. Let me tell you about our favorite places, best activities, and most excellent views. Are you ready?? Before we dive deep into our little selection, let’s talk about elopements first!

Why eloping in Switzerland?

Or maybe the question should be “why eloping in the first place?” To us, eloping is the truest and most personal way to celebrate your union with another person. What is it that you really feel like doing on this very special day? Let go of third-party expectations and make this day truly and uniquely yours. Maybe you’d love to go on a little adventure. Maybe a long, extended hike just feels right for you. And maybe, you don’t want to exchange your vows in front of everybody you know. That’s why eloping is absolutely perfect: You can simply do it your way. And as a bonus, Switzerland is full of beautiful registry offices to choose from. Check out our blog post about them here.

Eloping in Switzerland really is beautiful all year around. In spring and summer, lush green meadows invite hikers to rest and many come from all over the world for their outdoor adventures. Rock climbers race for the highest peaks and most difficult ascends, water sport enthusiasts set sail on the lakes, while others just enjoy being out and about for small or big hikes. In winter, the scenery changes completely: The highest peaks are covered in snow all year round, but as soon as it gets colder, the scenery follows. The trees have their branches covered in white, sparkly powder, the slopes are craving for skiers and snowboarders, everything becomes a little more quiet. Do you need some inspiration on what a winter elopement in the mountains could look like? Check out our blog post about the beauty of Tirol.

Here are our top 4 places to elope in Switzerland!

Grindelwald

Grindelwald is located in the the vicinity of Mount Eigner, and the entering gate to the Bernese Alps.

Last autumn, we went on a little journey to Grindelwald to explore the wonderful place. It was absolutely perfect: The trees had just turned orange, the sun was still warming our skin and the air felt crisp and clear. We went on some breathtaking hikes there - and of course, we took our camera to capture the beautiful scenery and a stunning couple.

Zermatt

The region is known as an incredible spot for skiing, hiking, and climbing. Depending on the time of the year, you will find it covered in snow with stunning views of the Matterhorn, beautiful slopes and hiking trails around, and of course, excellent food to be discovered.  A very special recommendation is the 5 lakes hike - as the name suggests, you hike along 5 lakes, the Matterhorn constantly in your view. The circular hike is stunning, all lakes have beautiful views, and it’s fairly easy to manage. Maybe perfect in a wedding dress?

Stellisee

Yes, technically, this is Zermatt again but hear me out! This lake is absolutely stunning, you can see the reflection of the Matterhorn in it. This very special place could be the perfect location to exchange your vows, and it is a truly romantic spot to watch the sunset with your loved one.

Canton of Ginsons

It’s the only trilingual canton in Switzerland and less known to the masses of tourists and sports enthusiasts that make their way to Switzerland every year. If you are looking for a more private and intimate spot, you might manage to find them here. One fifth of the canton is covered in trees, its large forests invite for long strolls and little adventures. The area is well known for exquisite wine, wonderful hikes, and welcoming, cute little villages.

The region is also stunning in summer: It’s a hiking paradise. Many trails of different difficulties invite experienced and less experienced hikers to get out their hiking boots, embrace the stunning views, and climb the highest mountains.
