Elopement inspiration: 6 reasons to elope in Tenerife

The largest of the seven Canary Islands is truly magical and therefore, a wonderful choice for your elopement. The volcanic island is unique in its landscape and full of hidden treasures to explore.

Its beautiful coastline frames the island, jagged cliffs with little caves and high viewpoints invite you to rest for a while, the turquoise water is perfect for watersports or a relaxing swim and the beaches stretch far enough that you won’t have to share the space with many other tourists. Inland you will find towering mountains, hiking trails meandering through volcanic soil and cute little villages, and some of the most unique flora and fauna.

When is the best time to elope in Tenerife?

The island is known for its good weather all year around. Even in winter, the temperatures don’t go much below 20 degrees and on average, the days are dry and warm. However, rain is a little more likely in the mountains further inland that are covered in a beautiful lush forest. Mt Teide is the highest mountain in all of Spain and has a slightly different microclimate than the rest of the island.

6 reasons to elope in Tenerife

Tenerife is absolutely stunning but if this isn’t reason enough to plan your dream elopement on the island, let us give you a few ideas on why eloping in Tenerife is just beautiful.

  1. Black volcanic beaches

We all love a pristine white beach but imagine eloping in a white dress against black volcanic rock! As Tenerife is of volcanic origin, most beaches you find here are black. They have a very special kind of magic and are like nothing that you have ever seen before - the perfect background for your elopement pictures.

2. Climbing an active volcano

Mount Teide is the highest mountain in Spain and, more interestingly, an active volcano. The hike itself is steep and strenuous and only recommended for dedicated and experienced hikers. Luckily, there is a cable car that can bring you up with way less effort if you’d rather just enjoy the view. You can then go for a hike on top of the volcano and explore its unique landscape: It’s covered in cacti and the view is of course absolutely stunning.

3. Dreamy forests straight out of a fairytale

The Anaga Rural Park is the oldest part of Tenerife (formed by a volcanic eruption about 9 Mio. years ago) and became a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2015. Why is it amazing? Their hiking trails allow for you to get lost in magical subtropical forests including the largest Laurel forest of the island. You can take a swim in one of their many natural pools, explore caves, and many other hidden mysterious places!

4. Try Tenerife’s unique cuisine

As you would expect, Tenerife has excellent fish dishes! Local fishermen bring in the catch of the day and you can get it fried, cooked, stewed or grilled. Sancocho Canaria is a very popular fish dish that is served on special occasions (like elopements, just saying) and worth a try! Their regional sauce is called Mojo and often paired with their famous Papas Arrugadas, a special potato dish. And of course, the dry climate is perfect to grow wine, so you will find a tasty local red or white to pair your dish with.

5. Adventure elopements in Tenerife

Time to get adventurous! Tenerife is excellent for a relaxed beach time. However, if you are the adventurous type, you will find your perfect elopement adventure here, no question! There are many opportunities to get excited: Book a helicopter flight over the island or if you want to be even closer, you might choose to go paragliding. The coastline is a paradise for anyone who loves watersports: Swimming, surfing, sailing, and diving are only a few options. And if you have never tried any of these, maybe this is the perfect place? Imagine starting your elopement with a boat trip to go snorkeling, surrounded by colorful fish and a beautiful underwater landscape… And if you prefer adventures on land, many trails invite you to go on long hikes or mountain biking tours and lead to little villages with tasty local food and a place to rest.

6. Swim with whales and dolphins

Last but not least, Tenerife’s wildlife will take your breath away. Many of their beaches have little ponds and caves that protect them from the waves. However, Tenerife is one of the few places where you can see dolphins and whales very close to the shore. Dolphins live there all year round while orcas and blue whales visit the area in specific seasons. What an experience!
