Queer elopements: Why safe spaces for LGBTQI+ couples are so important

Love is love and everyone should be able to choose with their hearts whoever they want to marry. That’s the pillar of our work and applies for every couple we work with. We welcome homosexual, lesbian, bisexual, trans, and non-binary couples and we are excited to be a part of your jouney. That’s why the thought of creating safe spaces is incredibly important to us. We want every couple to feel comfortable, seen, and supported.

We make this our personal mission, on one hand, because some of our most beloved people aren’t hetero sexual und we are lucky enough to whitness how brave they walk through life. And on the other hand, we think every person should be able to express their love however they want.

It hurts our hearts that not everyone gets the support they need and deserve, sometimes even from their closest friends and family. For wonderful humans out there, there are still some question marks around their identity and or their sexuality and it feels easier and safer to fully express this further away from their usual surroundings. That’s why we would love to create an experience that is truly yours and you feel safe and seen.

The whole narrative of getting married is unfortunately often told in a very hetero normative way Let us tell you, we started out in the normal wedding bustiness and most things are targeting white hetero women because for sure, they are the ones planning the wedding. Planning often starts with a visit to a wedding fair, a place full of princess brides, white dresses, glitter, and the well-groomed prince on his horse. Diversity? Never heard of it… Unfortunately, the Cinderella story still sells. We are convinced that we have the power to change this!

There is still very little visibility for queer couples (let’s not even start about non-monogamous forms of relationships…) and they often are not represented at all. However, our world is so diverse  and full of different needs and wishes. So many different little worlds co-exist and it’s just not right to try and press them all into the same template. That’s why we take the time to thoroughly discuss wishes and needs, any concerns our couples might have, and choose locations based on where they feel comfortable and can fully express themselves. (And we already have a list of countries that support equal marriage rights, check it out!) It’s your big day and it’s very important to us that you feel safe and seen.

Why we need more safe spaces for LGBTQI+ couples

It’s a very special feeling to say yes to each other. And even more so if you can celebrate your big moment together with friends and family, shed some happy tears together and share some long, tight hugs. Particularly for couples without a supportive family network, eloping is a wonderful way to make this day extra special. It allows you to plan your wedding day exactly how it feels right for you - and you get to see a stunning, possibly new location as well! Your elopement is entirely yours. If you feel like hopping on a plane to be in a remote and completely different place, that’s awesome. If you would rather stay closer to home, there are equally as many stunning places only a little drive or train ride away.

When we founded Way Up High Elopements, we had the vision to create wonderful experiences and safe spaces for couples. We are hoping to reach specifically the ones that don’t see themselves in a big white wedding. The ones that want to help us rewrite wedding stories as personal little adventures instead. We want to focus on individual ceremonies, adventure weddings, and elopements that you will remember for the rest of your life.

Together, we can change the narrative of weddings, create more visibility, and normalize living life on your terms. Let’s remember that often, the biggest stress factor in our life is third party opinions, not only when it comes to tying the knot. And we can reclaim this power by deciding differently. By choosing the path less trodden. By choosing fun!

With all our love,

Thijsiena & Marina
