Planning your Tirol elopement

If you are thinking about an adventure wedding, Tirol is the perfect destination. When planning a European elopement, many people think of the Swiss Alps or the Dolomites in Italy first. The Austrian Alps are equally as incredible - but less well known. It’s the perfect destination if you are planning to go on epic hikes, explore a mountain lake, or if you are excited about the idea of a winter elopement. Let me take you with you to a winter wonder land!

Why eloping in Tirol?

First of all, we love Austria. Especially in Tirol, you will find high mountain peaks, lush valleys, cute little mountain villages, and plenty of opportunities for adventure. Additionally, Tirol isn’t as overcrowded during high season as some other places might be. There will be plenty of spots where it’s just us and the magic of the moment. It’s calm and relaxing, the perfect place for an intimate ceremony away from the big crowds. Well, and it’s less expensive than the Swiss equivalent as well.

What’s the best season to elope in Tirol?

Tirol is a wonderful destination all year around. Therefore, it depends on you and the elopement you are planning. In winter, the Alps are covered in snow. There are several months of likely new snow and a good chance of a stunning winter wonderland. If you enjoy winter sports, there are many excellent places for skiing and snowboarding around. However, this season can also be highly unpredictable and we recommend you always have a plan B or even a plan C at hand… (If you’d like to know why, check out our elopement story from Tirol.)

The region is also stunning in summer: It’s a hiking paradise. Many trails of different difficulties invite experienced and less experienced hikers to get out their hiking boots, embrace the stunning views, and climb the highest mountains.

Getting married in Tirol

To tie the knot in Austria, you have a civil ceremony. These are held in the local registry office and are mostly short and matter-of-fact ceremonies. Therefore, we usually suggest to our couples to customize their own little personal ceremony later that day. There are many stunning locations where you can exchange your vows later with an epic view and as much personalisation as you wish.

Since 2019, same-sex couples can legally get married in Tirol, which makes it an even better destination for your adventure elopement. Most importantly, you don’t have to be Austrian to follow through with the ceremony. Check out our Elopement in Tirol with Mona and Lukas

In either way, you should plan ahead and submit the required paperwork in a timely manner to guarantee things go smoothly. And if you struggle with the right timeline for this, we are happy to advise you.

Adventure elopements in Tirol

In summer, there are plenty of basic mountain huts (often owned by the Austrian Alpine Club) throughout the Austrian Alps. They are absolutely perfect for true adventurers. Imagine the stunning colors for sunset and sunrise! Hiking in your wedding dress from hut to hut while having absolutely incredible views? Heck yes! This would be an absolutely memorable elopement, that’s for sure. However, you can also choose a lighter version, find a nice and cozy hotel and go on hikes from there.

Hiking in Tirol is like a little treasure hunt. It’s not just about towering mountains and incredible views. The valleys are lush and green in summer, full of wildlife, and sometimes, you will find azure blue lakes or roaring waterfalls next to your trail. Of course, not all of them have to be reached by hiking. Cable cars might carry you to the top of a mountain and sometimes, your adventure is just a short drive away. Additionally, there are many incredible rock climbing spots, mountain biking routes, and via ferratas.

In winter, particularly the higher regions turn into an absolute winter wonderland. This is the perfect time for adventurous wintersport lovers or anyone who likes the crackling snow under their feet and the sparkles on trees around them. Many tasty restaurants allow for a rest to warm up and feed the soul with some comfort food.
