Exciting elopement locations in the North of Spain

Are you dreaming of towering cliffs, scenic views, and beautiful beaches? Your dreams might be fulfilled in the nature reserves of Biscay (or Biskaia in Basque). We love the entirety of Spain but the Basque Country has a very special place in our hearts. It is situated in the North of Spain, its capital is Bilbao, a city that has a versatile offer of cultural beauty to explore. The Guggenheim museum is definitely worth a visit if you love arts (and interesting architecture).

The North of Spain offers a beautiful mix of lush nature and rough cliffs is the perfect spot for eloping. Located at the coastline, the climate is oceanic and has mild temperatures all year around. Its long winding trails invite to go on extensive hikes and allow you to fully immerse yourself in nature. And it’s an equally beautiful playground for all of you surfer boys and girls and beach lovers.

All of Spain is well-known for its incredible food culture and the Basque country scores in all areas. You can find cute small restaurants that serve you their hearty fish and meat dishes grilled over hot coals or you can enjoy a txakoli, a sparkling white wine, while embracing the stunning sunsets over the ocean.

Why are elopements so amazing?

We believe that making a promise to your partner is one of the most beautiful gifts you can give to another person - and it’s incredibly personal. Getting married should be about you and your partner, about no one else. If celebrating with a big crowd of relatives with expectations and stressful preparation just doesn’t sound like you, an elopement might be just the right thing! Celebrate your love exactly your way and enjoy an epic trip with your partner (and a small circle of people, if you feel like it). Eloping allows you to escape the stress to one of the most beautiful spots on earth and say your vows with the most stunning views while creating unforgettable memories together. Your marriage will be one big adventure and so should be the start of it! You’d love that? We are happy to help you plan and decide on which spot would feel just right for you. And even better, we are by your side to capture your big and small moments to conserve your beautiful memories forever.

Inspiration: Gaztelugatxe in Bizkaia

I took pictures of this wonderful couple close to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe in the province of Bizkaia. It’s been a little windy, the ocean was a little rough and water was sparkling in the evening light - the atmosphere was absolutely perfect! Arianna and Ramon had a beautiful day taking strolls along the coastline enjoying the play of lights.

The Basque country coastline spans approximately 200 km in the North of Spain and connects to the South West of France. It is a popular spot for surfers from all over the world, two places in particular:

  • Mundaka is a cute little surfer town, located only around 40km northeast of Bilbao. It’s river flows into the ocean and creates an impressive swell. The town is surrounded by the UNESCO Urdaibai Biosphere reserve and attracts surfers with its great atmosphere and good surf.

  • Zarautz is a small town close to San Sebastian with an impressively long beach that spans two and a half kilometers of coastline. It’s a great surfing destination but also worth visiting if you love long walks along the beach!

Why did we choose this spot? You may recognize the area and Gaztelugatxe. The little island has been one of the filming locations of Game of Thrones. It’s Dragonstone, Daenerys Targaryen's castle. And it doesn’t stop there. The Basque country has many other beautiful places to discover: The Itzurun beach in Zumaia is one of the most spectacular locations in this area. It is overlooked by huge walls of limestone but its actual attraction is a geological phenomena called flysch caused by the erosion of the sea over thousands of years.

Bilbao itself has a lot to offer. Next to the museo Guggenheim, it has some stunning old architecture to explore and its colourful streets invite you to get lost (and maybe find some beautiful gems). However, the beach is not far and you won’t even have to drive far to find hidden and quiet places to enjoy some solitude.
