Caitlin and Craig’s Chic & Whimsical Rainy Elopement in Annecy, France

When Caitlin and Greg reached out about their elopement, they had a clear vision in mind: something mountain-inspired, effortlessly chic, and deeply intimate. Traveling all the way from the United States, they chose Annecy, France—a destination known for its crystal-clear lake, charming old town, and breathtaking alpine surroundings.

Late September in Annecy can be unpredictable, and despite checking the forecast daily, the weather had other plans. Rain was inevitable. But if there’s one thing that defined Caitlin and Greg’s day, it was this: they embraced every moment exactly as it came.

Getting Ready by the Lake

The day began at the iconic Imperial Palace, a historic lakeside hotel that perfectly set the tone for their elegant elopement. Soft clouds rolled in over Lake Annecy, creating a dreamy, almost painterly backdrop. Instead of clear blue skies, they were gifted something far more atmospheric—moody light, gentle mist, and a sense of quiet romance.

Wandering Through Annecy in the Rain

Rather than letting the rain dictate the day, Caitlin and Greg leaned into it. With a shared umbrella and a spirit of adventure, we wandered through Annecy’s cobblestone streets, turning every corner into a photo opportunity.

From a spontaneous carousel ride to ducking into cozy corners of the old town, the day unfolded naturally. One of the most memorable moments happened in a small local bakery. Welcomed warmly by the staff, Caitlin and Greg were surprised with a petite wedding cake. That didn’t stop them from indulging in even more French pastries, of course.

What followed was pure magic—the bakery staff, charmed by the couple, put on music, and suddenly the space transformed into a tiny celebration. Laughter, dancing, and joy filled the room. It was unplanned, unscripted, and completely unforgettable.

Slow Moments & Meaningful Words

In the afternoon, we returned to the hotel for a quieter, more intimate part of the day. Caitlin and Greg took time to read letters from their loved ones, grounding the experience in connection and meaning, even from afar.

Into the Clouds: A Mountain Ceremony Like No Other

Later, we made our way up into the mountains. The fog had settled in thickly, hiding the sweeping alpine views Annecy is known for. But what might seem like a disappointment to some became the most extraordinary setting.

Wrapped in layers and surrounded by mist, Caitlin and Greg exchanged their vows in what felt like another world. The fog created a soft, ethereal atmosphere—it was as if they were standing in the clouds, completely alone, suspended in time.

There were no grand vistas, no dramatic peaks in sight. Instead, there was stillness. Intimacy. Presence.

And it was perfect.

A Different Kind of Beauty

This elopement wasn’t about perfect weather or postcard views. It was about connection, spontaneity, and finding beauty in the unexpected. From rain-soaked streets to a bakery dance party, and finally a ceremony hidden in the clouds, Caitlin and Greg’s day was a reminder that the most meaningful experiences are often the ones you don’t plan.

If you’re dreaming of an elopement in Annecy—or anywhere in the mountains—know this: it doesn’t have to be perfect to be unforgettable.

Sometimes, the fog makes it even more magical.
